EDITOR: We were shocked and disappointed to learn that the historic Blanchard Bridge has been given away to be relocated to Wisconsin (Hillsboro Banner, May 4, 2007, page 3).
We were not notified or consulted during the decision process to remove this historic landmark from Traill County.
The Blanchard Bridge was built in 1900 by a N.D. based bridge builder and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It is familiar to all who travel ND State Highway 18 by Blanchard and is a treasured landmark that should remain where it has been for 107 years. Keep reading →

DOT engineer responds to city’s road dilemma

EDITOR: The recent article, “No Consensus,” discusses a proposed project for Hwy. 200 in Hillsboro.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), the city of Hillsboro, and the Federal Highway Administration have been working together on proposed improvements of the urban section of ND Hwy. 200 in Hillsboro for two years.
The purpose of this project is to improve the urban section of Hwy. 200 in Hillsboro, which includes improving pavement condition; roadway drainage; and providing ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant facilities for pedestrians.
The city council members of Hillsboro saw the importance of this project and had the foresight to work with NDDOT to apply for a grant three years ago to help fund it. The grant program, entitled ND STREET (N.D. Small Town Revitalization Endeavor for Enhancing Transportation), was created to enable cities with less than 5,000 in population to upgrade existing pavement infrastructure and enhance the appearance of sidewalks on a state highway through town. Peace could spread worldwide from Peace Garden State

Editor: I know that the quality of life in North Dakota is an important idea that we all strive for.
I think that North Dakota is the best place to live for a quality life. Our motto as the “Peace Garden State” puts the state in a place where a peaceful quality of life is enjoyed. I was interested in the idea to start a “peace study” at the “Peace Gardens,” but I do not know if that ever was developed. Keep reading →
